MY DOG HAS DIABETES

Hi!! My name is Little Bit. I am a 9 y/o Bichon Frise and I have a diabetes type 1, meaning I am insulin dependent. I am taking over Mama’s blog today so I could take you to my journey.

If you think your fur baby has diabetes, then I will be happy to share to you my journey.Ā

I was born in Clearwater, FL in Nov. 19, 2012. I was born healthy. I grew up happy and playful. I don’t bark much and I never really learned how to snap or growl, I love to smile. The first word my Mama taught me is ” NO ” like ” Little Bit No, don’t do this don’t do that ” and per my hooman friends, I am a really really good girl. I am everyone’s favorite!! šŸ™‚

When I was growing up, I realized I love foods, but not only dog food but hooman’s food. I started getting interested with my Mama’s food and the first taste of chicken was sooo good, then beef, then vegetables and rice. So what I did, I won’t eat my dog food and pretended I’m not interested so I could wait for Mama to eat her dinner and I will give her this pity look and she gives in and would give me her hooman food. I also realized I love to eat and sleep a lot like my Mama. IĀ  never really got sick until I was 5 y/o when I started gaining weight. I remember my Mama would walk me and then I would sit and get short of breath. I would huff and puff and my Mama wound end up carrying me home.

When I turned 6 y/o I was at my biggest. As a girly Bichon, I think my weight is only supposed to be up to 22 lbs but I went up to 29 lbs. I know. But just to let you know I am a bigger type of Bichon, I was already 13 lbs when I was born. So everytime we go for a walk, I would huff and puff and then I started getting thirsty and I would gulp water all day long. My Mama is in a medical field and she was hoping it was just a UTI ( Urinary Tract Infection ) so she made a vet appointment and unfortunately she was told that I have DM Type I meaning I will be insulin-dependent and that I have to start insulin right away. I remember this was in April 2019 when I started insulin.

These are the following signs and symptoms of my DM TYPE I:

  1. Excessive drinking of water – I would sit in front of my bowl and would gulp water all day long.
  2. Excessive thirst – My Mama started adding another bowl of water.
  3. Increased peeing – It’s like I wanted to live outside because I pee all the time.
  4. Vomiting – I have never vomited before and this was new to me.
  5. Increase sensitivity to food – If I don’t feel good, I won’t eat all day.Ā
  6. Stomach upset – I have never done this before but I learned that everytime this happens, I would eat GRASS..yes!! I eat grass when I get an upset stomach
  7. My eyes looks tired and sadĀ  – then I give my Mama this pity look coz I didn’t want her to leave šŸ™

In April 2019 is when my Mama started giving me insulin shots.Ā  I didn’t know what it was first but later on I realized if I don’t have it I get really thirsty. When my Mama is still asleep and I need to eat so I could have my shots I would wake her up by laying beside her or on top of her, sometime if I really need to go pee I would sit over her head and she will get up, that’s just my way of waking her up!!

These are some of my pics and I think I look cute! I love to sit on my butt-butt.

Back in 2019 I got really sick by eating fried chicken and I got pancreatitis, I stayed at the doggies hospital for 4 days and I thought I was not gonna make it. The vet told Mama my body is not accepting the IV fluids. I was so sick and alone over the weekend at the pet clinic but when I woke up Sunday I felt a lot better, then Mama told me she cried to the Lord that night for HIM to heal my pancreas/kidney as she is not ready to lose me and HE answered her prayers!! So,  if I don’t stick with my diet, if I get sick again,  I might not live longer so Mama tries her best to put me on a strict diet and I will share to you  my prescription food.

Having diabetes is not easy. Sometimes I would wake up not feeling good, I just won’t move then I would run towards my Mama for her to carry me like I’m scared for her to leave me. She thinks my sugar might be low and I get lightheaded when that happens.

Here are my prescription diet which was recommended by my vet:

For my prescription wet food, I haveĀ  Hill’s w/d in vegetable & chicken stew flavor, she mixes it with flaked baked chicken and green beans. I eat this 2x daily.

I also have w/d kibbles which is available 24/7 as I get hungry off and on and of course water.

For insulin I have NOVOLIN 100 units. Mama gives me 8 units in the morning and 9 units at night. Our goal is to bring me down again to 100-200 md/dL. It depends on what I eat sometimes.

So far I feel healthy, I feel great. IĀ have not had any stomach upset or lightheadedness lately. I have good appetite and always looking forward for my treat!! We religiously go the the vet every 3 weekends. I have an awesome vet!!

I hope this blog helps you understand about pretty doggies like me with diabetes.
